Upper Mustang

The trek to Upper Mustang takes you through the semi-desert terrain, featuring dramatic canyons, arid landscapes, and towering cliffs, with the iconic peaks of the Himalayas in the distance. The region is renowned for its ancient monasteries, cave dwellings, and the walled city of Lo Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang, which still retains its medieval Tibetan architecture.

The trek to Upper Mustang typically takes around 12 to 14 days, starting from the town of Jomsom, which is accessible by a short flight from Pokhara. The trek involves moderate to strenuous hiking, with altitudes reaching up to 4,000 meters, especially in Lo Manthang. Due to the arid nature of the region, the climate is generally dry, with sunny weather during the day and cooler temperatures at night.

To enter Upper Mustang, trekkers must obtain a special permit, as it is a restricted area. These permits can be arranged through registered trekking agencies. Accommodation is available in local teahouses and basic guesthouses, with traditional Tibetan-style hospitality.
